Sunset Parade in D.C.

This was a momentous trip for more than one reason.  Adam wanted to go and see the sunset parade before he started classes.  They are held only on Tuesday nights in the summer.  It is truly a site to see.  I really can't even begin to express just how "cool" the parade is.

We decided to drive to the nearest metro stop and hitch a ride.  We thought it would be a good experience for both Gavin and I.  I have to admit I was a little anxious about the trip because we were going to be out way past little man's bedtime.  And for those who know me, I'm a little protective of Gav's sleep :).

Waiting for the Metro

Watching the world go by...he's not used to being able to see out while riding

The metro ride was a good experience, lots of nice people, but unfortunately had no air conditioning...again with LOTS of nice people!  After getting off the metro, and entering the city, we had plenty of time to grab a bite to eat.  The nearest thing...Ruby Tuesday.  I wish we had a snapped a picture of the restaurant because it was tucked away in a business district. It took us a couple of minutes to figure out how to enter because the doors to the actual restaurant were located inside the office building.  This may be no big deal for you "city folks" but for us...it was something.

After dinner, we had a short walk across the interstate to the Iwo Jima memorial where the parade was held.  On the way there, we caught a glimpse of a picketer getting lectured by a police officer.  We're not sure if he was getting in trouble or just getting a "talking to."  Either way, we thought it was note worthy :).

Walking up to the memorial, there were Marines standing along the path in their dress blues...enlisted and officer alike, some decorated combat veterans, old and young, active and retired.  It was a very sobering experience to say the least.

After grabbing our seat on the lawn, Gavin waisted no time doing what he does best...eating things!  This is him about to put a leaf or something into his mouth.

This is daddy fishing it out...

Now it's my turn.  He would survive solely on ruffage if it were up to him!

The parade began with some songs from the Marine Corps Band.

Gavin was moving and clapping to the beat.

Then it was time to see the Silent Drill Team!

After an awesome performance, it was time to go.  Gavin did so great for it to be about an hour and a half past his bedtime with a train and a car ride still left on the agenda for the night.

It was a lot of work and anxious moments (for me anyway) but when it was all said and done...it was worth it!  I am very proud to be apart of something as special as the United States Marine Corps!

Semper Fidelis!
